Contingency management: Drug testing is an essential component of contingency management — the evidence-based treatment that uses positive reinforcement to reward abstinence. Negative urine tests trigger rewards; positive tests do not.
Avoiding punitive use: Using drug testing primarily to catch and punish people for relapse undermines the therapeutic relationship and drives people away from treatment. A positive test should trigger a clinical response — assessment of what happened, adjustment of the treatment plan — not punishment.
Can I fail a drug test from secondhand smoke?
Secondhand cannabis smoke can theoretically cause a positive urine test, but only under extreme conditions (being in a very small, unventilated space with heavy smokers for extended periods). Under normal conditions, secondhand smoke does not produce positive drug tests.
Does drinking water help pass a drug test?
Drinking large amounts of water dilutes urine, which can reduce drug metabolite concentrations below the cutoff level. How accurate are home drug tests?
