1-6 months: Significant improvements in mood, energy, and cognitive function. Dopamine receptor density begins to recover. Sleep normalizes. The most severe depression and anhedonia typically resolve within 3-6 months.

6-12 months: Continued improvement in cognitive function — memory, attention, and executive function show measurable recovery. Brain volume begins to increase in regions affected by meth use.

12-24 months: Significant neurological recovery is measurable at 12-14 months of abstinence. Dopamine receptor density approaches normal levels. Cognitive function continues to improve.

2+ years: Continued recovery, though some neurological effects may persist for years. The brain's capacity for neuroplasticity means that recovery continues well beyond the first year.

Exercise. Exercise is one of the most evidence-based interventions for meth recovery. It promotes neurogenesis (the growth of new brain cells), increases dopamine receptor density, reduces depression, and improves cognitive function. Regular aerobic exercise — even walking — produces measurable neurological benefits in meth recovery.

Cognitive rehabilitation. Structured cognitive exercises — memory training, attention training, problem-solving tasks — can accelerate the recovery of cognitive function.
